Emirates Skywards is the loyalty program for the Dubai-based airline Emirates. It utilizes a 'hard expiry' system for its miles, meaning they expire after a fixed period, irrespective of account activity.
Emirates Skywards Miles Expiration Policy
Emirates Skywards miles have a fixed expiration date. Miles are generally valid for three years from the date they were earned. More specifically, they expire at the end of the month of the recipient's birthday in the third year after being earned.
For example:
- If your birthday is in July and you earned miles on May 15, 2025, those miles would expire on July 31, 2028.
- If your birthday is in December and you earned miles on February 10, 2026, those miles would expire on December 31, 2029.
Important: Account activity, such as earning or redeeming miles, does not extend the validity of Skywards miles you have already earned. Each mile has its own ~3-year lifespan tied to your birthday month. Emirates Platinum members may have exceptions where their miles do not expire as long as they maintain Platinum status.
This policy requires members (especially non-Platinum) to track when their miles expire and plan redemptions accordingly.
Keeping Track and Using Miles
Since activity doesn't prevent expiration for most members, the only way to avoid losing Emirates Skywards miles is to redeem them before their specific expiration date.
- Check your Skywards account regularly. It should indicate when batches of your miles are set to expire.
- Plan your redemptions, such as booking award flights on Emirates or partner airlines, or using miles for upgrades, well before the expiration date.
- Emirates sometimes offers the option to pay a fee to extend the validity of expiring miles for another 12 months, but this is generally not cost-effective compared to simply redeeming them.
How to Reinstate Expired Emirates Miles
If your Emirates Skywards miles have expired, you may be able to bring them back — but it comes at a significant cost.
- Eligibility: Only miles that expired within the last six months can be reinstated.
- Reinstatement amount: Must be done in blocks of 1,000 miles.
- Cost: $20 for every 1,000 miles.
- Annual cap: You can reinstate up to 50,000 miles per calendar year.
Once reinstated, miles are only valid for 12 months from the reinstatement date. Because of the high fee and limited validity, it is best to have a clear plan to use these miles before paying to restore them.
Emirates also allows you to pay the reinstatement fee in advance for miles that will expire in the next three months. In this case, the miles remain valid for 12 months from their scheduled expiration date.
How to Boost Your Emirates Skywards Balance
If reinstating expired miles is too costly or not enough, Emirates offers several other ways to build your Skywards balance. While you can buy miles directly, the program is also linked with a wide range of transfer partners across major credit card rewards programs.

Emirates Skywards Elite Status
Emirates Skywards, the loyalty program of Emirates, offers four elite status tiers ranging from entry-level Blue to top-tier Platinum. Members can qualify either by earning tier miles or by taking a set number of flights within a year.
- Blue: Entry-level, no qualification required
- Silver: 25,000 tier miles or 25 flights
- Gold: 50,000 tier miles or 50 flights
- Platinum: 150,000 tier miles plus at least one qualifying flight in business or first class
All members with Silver status or higher enjoy perks such as complimentary lounge access in Dubai and priority check-in. Gold and Platinum members gain additional benefits like guaranteed seats on sold-out flights and priority baggage delivery, while Platinum members also enjoy access to Emirates’ worldwide first-class lounges.
Mileage earning also improves as you move up the tiers: Silver members earn a 30% bonus, Gold members 75%, and Platinum members 100%.
Redeeming Emirates Skywards Miles
Emirates-Operated Flights
Because Emirates is not part of a major alliance, most members will focus on redeeming Skywards miles for flights operated by Emirates itself. The airline connects its Dubai hub to hundreds of destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and North America.
Emirates does not publish a fixed award chart. Instead, travelers must use the airline's Miles Calculator to check redemption rates for specific routes. For example:
- JFK to Dubai (DXB):
- Economy Saver – 30,000 miles one-way
- Economy Flex Plus – 50,000 miles one-way
Emirates also operates two fifth-freedom routes from the U.S., which can be excellent ways to use miles without flying through Dubai:
- JFK – Milan (MXP)
- Newark (EWR) – Athens (ATH)
One-way award prices for these flights are:
- Economy Saver – 17,500 miles
- Business Saver – 87,000 miles
- First Flex Plus – 102,000 miles
Important note: Only Silver, Gold, and Platinum members can redeem Skywards miles for Emirates first class. Non-elites cannot book first class with Skywards, although they can use other partner programs like Qantas.
At this time, Skywards does not allow premium economy redemptions.
Fuel surcharges are a major drawback of Emirates awards. A round-trip from the U.S. to Dubai typically includes about $450 in taxes and fees in economy and more than $1,700 in business or first class. By contrast, the Europe fifth-freedom flights tend to carry more modest surcharges of only a few hundred dollars.

Bottom Line
Unlike many loyalty programs, Emirates miles do not expire based on account activity. Instead, they expire on a fixed timeline: at the end of your birth month, three years after they are earned. Unless you hold a co-branded Emirates credit card or enjoy Platinum status, you will need to use your miles before that deadline.
If your miles have already expired, reinstatement is possible but expensive. A better long-term strategy is to keep building your balance through one of Emirates’ many transfer partners so you always have enough miles available for your next award redemption.
